Shrine History

Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine is dedicated to Susano-no-Mikoto.  He was the brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu, from whom the Japanese imperial bloodline is descended.

During the first year of the Shohei Era - 1346 - the spirit of Susano-no-mikoto was relocated from the Hikawa Grand Shrine in Omiya (present-day Saitama City), and enshrined here in Numabukuro.

He is highly revered in Japanese folklore: like St. George in western mythology, he slayed an almighty beast; he taught the early Japanese people how to farm, hunt and plant trees, and he excelled in the literary arts.  Due to the latter, he is often regarded as the founder of Waka poetry.

Susano-no-mikoto became widely regarded as one of the most powerful and heroic of all the gods.  Because of this people worshipped him in the hopes of warding of disease; bringing good harvests and to general blessings on all who came before him.

Today, although traditional agricultural industry has been replaced by modern industry and trade, belief in Susano-no-mikoto continues to grow.  His protection is still sought after by those in all kinds of industries.

Message from the Shrine

Welcome to Japan and to Nakano Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine!

Once you enter the shrine through the torii gate, you will be surrounded by sacred air.  Take a deep breath.  The trees, the birdsong, the sunlight: everything is blessing the couple.

Susano-no-mikoto, the god of the ceremony, is a famous deity in Japanese mythology.  He is brave and just, and also a loving husband.

We, the Shinto priests, ask Susano-no-mikoto to bless the couple with a long life together.  We will give you a small shrine and a talisman to take home.  And that way, Susano-no-Mikoto will be able to protect and bless you from afar and in Japan forever.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family and friends.
